Avoiding Worker’s Compensation Scams

Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission (IWCC) wants the people of Illinois to be aware of workers’ compensation scams. Scammers have been contacting people posing as judges, attorneys, or state employees as a way to secure personal information and monetary gain. There are a few ways listed below to spot a scam.

1. If an unexpected call from an out of state attorney tries to reach you claiming that you won your case and need to pay for the labor, do not transfer any money. Hang up and call your own attorney.

2. If you receive an email about a worker’s compensation case, make sure that it ends with the illinois.gov address.

3. The IWCC does not charge fees for workers’ compensation benefits and does not request payments through wire transfer or pressure you to pay immediately.

4. The IWCC does not do zoom hearings. All hearings are in person.

Knowing the ways to spot a scam can help you not fall victim. There are other ways to protect yourself, so you are not an easy target.

1. Come up with unique passwords for you financial accounts

2. Safeguard your smartphone with facial recognition or a fingerprint.

3. Do not click on random emails sent to your account.

4. Set limits on social media to help with privacy.

5. Don’t pay someone in gift cards.
